Set on a rocky cliff the Lime Kiln Lighthouse on San Juan Island, Washington guides ships through the Haro Strait, a major shipping route that links Puget Sound to the Strait of Georgia. In the distance are the shores of Vancouver Island.
It was completed in 1919 and is the last major light established in Washington State and the last to be electrified; not until after World War II. The site also contains two concrete dwellings. Home for the light keepers until the lighthouse was automated in 1962.
The lighthouse, located in Lime Kiln Point State Park, watches over the whales in Deadman’s Bay on the western side of the island. It is one of the best whale-watching points in the world. Kilns Point gets its name from the historic lime kilns and surrounding quarries that supplied limestone for almost 60 years. The kilns would tun limestone into quick lime used for mortar in building construction.
