A local bayman completing his morning run along the western end of Fire Island off the southern coast of Long Island, N.Y.
In the distance is the Fire Island Lighthouse, a brick 168 ft. landmark on the western end of island, located within the Fire Island National Seashore established in 1964. The National Seashore protects a 26 mile stretch of Fire Island separated from Long Island by the Great South Bay. Only two bridges lead to the island and there are no public roads within the seashore itself.
The current lighthouse was built in 1858, replacing the original built in 1826. It marks the first sight of land upon arrival for transatlantic ships coming to New York Harbor at the turn of the 19th century carrying European Immigrants.
Today the light is lit by two 1000-watt bulbs, which rotate in a counter-clockwise direction, giving the appearance of a flash every 7.5 seconds. The light is visible for approximately 21-24 miles.
